Sustainable packaging awards presented at the Riga Food 2026
Sustainable packaging is a competition that promotes wider use of sustainable packaging. During the Riga Food 2026, its organisers – Latvian packaging association and BT1 International Expo Company – awarded its winners.
After evaluating entries submitted for the competition, and packaging presented by exhibitors in their booths, professional judges were ready to announce the winners. This year there were three companies – Šerno Pėda (Lithuania), Kazanova (Latvia) and Lat Eko Food (Latvia) – that were awarded for their contribution to development of sustainable packaging.
Winners of the competition were celebrated in a ceremony on 12 September on the Main Stage of Riga Food. Awards were presented by Sandra Muižniece-Brasava, Chairman of the Board of the Latvian Packaging Association, Nadīna Neimane-Gardoviča, Executive Director, Latvian Packaging Association and Rolands Nežborts, Project Manager, Riga Food.
Sustainable solutions: from wood to mono-materials
- ŠERNO PĖDA (Lithuania) were awarded for their cured venison ham packaging. Packaging was made of wood, chosen not only for its appealing look but also because it amplifies the product narrative, making product more natural and authentic overall.
- KAZANOVA (Latvia) were awarded for Old Town balsam bottle made of ceramics and fitted with wooden cork. Once balsam has been consumed, bottle can be reused further – either as oil, syrup or home liqueur dispenser. It can also be used a s vase or interior accessory. This is a packaging that does not become disposable upon consumption of the contents.
- Lat Eko Food (Latvia) was awarded for its packaging of “Rūdolfs” puree. Pauch is made of MonoPP mono-material. In comparison with conventional multilayered materials, mono-material is easier to recycle. Plastic cork is the crowning element of the packaging. It can be separated and recycled. Moreover, it also has a great upcycling potential. Cork can also be used to develop fine motor skills in kids or at home, for example, to plug power sockets.
