Nordic and Baltic cider competition and its events at Riga Food “Nordic International Cider Awards” (NICA) at the "Riga Food 2023"

The Nordic International Cider Awards competition will take place at the Riga Food 2023 fair in Latvia, on 6-9 September. The event is aimed at promoting natural apple cider made in Latvia and to raise its international visibility.

Event schedule

6 September

• NICA competition procedure
The ciders will be assessed at the Sidrērija cider bar in Vecrīga, www.sidrerija.lv
The contestants will be judged by a two-level jury: Level 1, with some 20 cider manufacturers from different countries, and Level 2, with 7 professional cider experts.
The following specialists have already confirmed their participation in the jury: Haritz Rodriguez from the Asturias region of Spain, Claude Jolicoeur from Canada, Johan Sjöstedt from Sweden, Matthijs van Meurs from Norway, Michael Stöckl from Germany, as well as others.
• Dinner and socialising at the Sidrērija cider bar

7 September
• Awarding of NICA winners immediately after the official opening ceremony of Riga Food 2023
• ‘Sidra ceļš’ (‘Cider Road’) with Latvia’s cider makers at the joint Latvian national booth
• Cider festival: tasting ciders from Latvia and other countries at Riga Food 2023. Participants: invited guests, including representatives of the media, sommeliers, cider experts, manufacturers, policymakers, horticulturists, etc.
• Dinner with Live Riga in Riga, with a speech for guests and manufacturers by their Riga hosts (N/A). Participation of Riga’s hospitality sector: restaurants offer a variety of Latvian ciders, with small snacks. The restaurants are marked on a special Riga cider map (N/A)

8 September
• ‘Sidra ceļš’ (‘Cider Road’) with Latvia’s cider makers at the joint Latvian national booth
• Discussion and sharing of experience among professional cider makers from the Baltics and other countries at Riga Food. International cider experts will offer an introductory statement for the discussion. Working language: English. Duration: 3 hours. Coffee break/lunch
• Sharing of experience for international participants: a visit to the ‘Abavas vīna darītava’ and ‘Sabiles sidrs’ production facilities
• Presentation of Latvian and Baltic cider apple varieties by the Dobele Institute of Horticulture
• End-of-day dinner at Restoterase in Sabile, www.restoterase.lv

9 September
• ‘Sidra ceļš’ (‘Cider Road’) with Latvia’s cider makers at the joint Latvian national booth
• Sharing of experience for international participants: a trip to cider houses in the Vidzeme region of Latvia (Plūme, Abuls, Tālava)
