On 4 September, the Riga Food 2019 competition kitchen will be taken up by famous Latvian chefs or dinosaurs, as they say jokingly, Lauris Aleksejevs, Raimonds Zommers, Valters Zirdziņš, Māris Jansons, Jānis Zvirbulis, Ingmārs Ladigs, who will compete for the title of Latvian Master Chef. “People often complain that only young chefs compete in the chefs’ competitions. This time, therefore, it will be an exciting battle between six great and experienced masters who will show their skills in art of cooking wonderful dishes and at the same time a meeting of like-minded friends aimed to develop Latvian cuisine and share knowledge and experience with the younger generation. The Master Chef competition participants include one of the founders of the Latvian Chefs’ Club, chef of the “Kest” Restaurant” Māris Jansons, the chef of the “36. Līnija” restaurant Lauris Aleksejevs, the owner and chef of “Valtera restorāns” Valters Zirdziņš, the chef of the “Entresol” restaurant Raimonds Zommers, the chef of “Fish House Brasserie de Luxe” Jānis Zvirbulis and the chef of “Ladig’s café” Ingmārs Ladigs.
The Latvian Master Chef 2019 competition will take place in the Riga Food 2019 Hall I from 14.00–15.00 on September 4.
Just a few minutes before the starting signal, the contestants will find out the products required to be used for cooking hidden in the black box. Each contestant will have to cook a main dish for six persons. The chefs may invite one assistant, but the latter will not be allowed to cook. The competition will take place in six competition kitchens and the visitors are welcome to watch competition, genuine emotions, interaction between chefs and assistants, and the members of jury.
Valters Zirdziņš, a participant of the Latvian Master Chef 2019 competition, says that it is important not to just do, but to do the best one can: “A real cook always looks for and aims for the best, he has his philosophy, character and dreams reflected in the dishes he creates!”
The winner of this competition will be determined by a professional and international jury: Jo Nelissen from Belgium, Franciane Tartari from England, Aleksander Prokopovich from Russia, Dmitry Demjanov, Emannuel Wille, Vladislav Djatsuk and Pavel Gurjanov from Estonia, Gert Kletzke from Sweden and Jorn Lie from Norway. The members of jury will judge the design of food, compositional colours and forms, the compatibility of products and taste, the conformity of odour, flavour and consistency, technical craftsmanship, work organisation and creativity.
On September 4, Riga Food 2019 will also offer the Latvian Chef of the Year 2019 and Latvian Journeyman Chef of the Year 2019 competitions. On September 5, visitors will have an opportunity to watch the national selection for the world’s most prestigious chef competition “Bocuse d’ Or”, but, on September 6, to support the participants of the Baltic Culinary Heritage 2019 and the Baltic Student Chef Zero Waste Challenge.
