From 28 February to 1 March visitors will have the chance to attend the international book and publishing exhibition “Latvian Book Fair 2020” in Ķīpsala, where guests will be able to find a diverse range of books from foreign publishers as well as Latvian ones. For the second year in a row, the Fair will include the Ukrainian national exhibition “Ukrainian Book”, where visitors will have the opportunity to learn about Ukrainian literature and meet authors.
“Latvian Book Fair 2020” will host the Riga-born Ukrainian poet Andriy Lyubka; author Roman Zinenko; writer and owner of “Folio” publishing house Oleksandr Krasovytskyy; one of the best journalists in Ukraine, literary critic and writer Oleg Kudrin; as well as the representatives of publishers “Folio” and “Ranok” and the creative agency “Green Penguin”.
Approximately 100 different books, offered by Ukrainian publishers including “Folio”, “Ranok”, “Vivat”, “Staroho Leva”, and “Meridian Czernowitz”, will be presented at the Ukrainian national exhibition. Guests will have the chance to view books from the “PEN iesaka” (“PEN Recommends”) project by the Latvian PEN Centre.
On 28 February at 12:00, the Writer’s Lounge will host the Latvian and Ukrainian PEN Centres’ panel discussion “Grāmata vs televizors. Informācijas kaujas” (“Book vs TV. Information battles”), in which poet Inga Gaile, publicist Ilmārs Šlāpins, poet Aivars Eipurs and Ukrainian author and member of the Ukrainian PEN Centre Andriy Lyubka will take part and try to answer the question, “Does the future belong to those who read?”
Visitors are also invited to the Grand Stage at 16:00 on the first day of the Fair for a meet-and-greet with Ukrainian authors Andriy Lyubka, Oleksandr Krasovytskyy and Roman Zinenko, who will be presenting their latest books. By the way, Andriy Lyubka has received the Kovalev Foundation’s (USA) Literary Prize and was the 2017 laureate of the Sheveliov Prize as the author of the best essay collection in Ukraine.
And at 17:00, there will be a meeting with representatives of Ukrainian publishers “Folio” and “Ranok”, who will share their experience and discuss the market trends and perspectives of the Ukrainian book publishing industry, as well as its cooperation with foreign publishers. The event will also include a presentation by the creative agency “Green Penguin”. The event will be moderated by Ukrainian journalist and writer Oleg Kudrin, who will also be presenting his latest book on the Ukrainian poet Lina Kostenko at the “Latvian Book Fair 2020”. The events will be held in Ukrainian, but interpretation into Latvian will be ensured.
On 1 March at 15:15, the Fun Reading Room will host the presentation of the book “Kniga-mandrivka. Ukrayina” (“Book-journey. Ukraine”), as well as the demonstration of the animated film by the same name (in Ukrainian). The most active members of the audience will have the opportunity to win the book.
Just like last year, after the end of the “Latvian Book Fair” most of the exhibited books will be donated to the Riga Ukrainian Secondary School, the National Library of Latvia and the Ukrainian Information Centre of the Academic Library of the University of Latvia. The booth “Ukrainian Book” is provided by Kultūras centrs “Latvija-Ukraina” (Latvia-Ukraine Cultural Centre) with the support of the Ukrainian Embassy in Latvia.
