The Green Expo Riga 2019 Green Talks Stage Programme was successfully run at Kipsala International Exhibition Centre on 27 and 28 September. For two days, interested parties were able to acquaint with eco-friendly innovative solutions and to follow discussions on different green ideas and topics.
“We are pleased with the positive feedback made by visitors showing that we are on the right track! Therefore, “Green Expo Riga 2020” will continue to create constructive discussions between specialists and interested persons, to present practical solutions based on Latvian resources, as well as we will invite sustainability pioneers to inspire young people,” points out Jānis Brinkmanis, a director of “Green Expo Riga”.
Discussions on municipal reform, agriculture and green health
For two days, 35 well-known public figures, experts and specialists shared experience, presented eco-friendly innovative solutions, participated in discussions and debates on various eco-ideas, and provided advice on healthy living, farming and working. On the whole, listeners had a chance to get acquainted with 29 presentations. See presentations and discussions, here - YouTube!
On September 27, the Green Expo Riga Green Talks started with a discussion on municipality reform, where an alternative view was offered by Andris Miglavs, an economist from EDO Consult, while the discussion on the development of Latvia’s green economy was attended by an economic anthropologist Andris Šuvajevs and the Latvian Association of Local and Regional Governments Adviser on Economy Andra Feldmane. Topics on waste management were covered by Anitra Tooma, an editor-in-chief of the magazine “Vides vēstis”, Vismands Menjoks, Chief Commercial Officer at Applyit, who also presented a smart deposit machine for sorting waste.
On 28 September, the most discussed topic was organic farming and bioeconomy. Researcher Elita Benga from the Institute of Agricultural Resources and Economics, Jānis Eglīts, a head of Minister for Agriculture Office, Jana Simanovska, a head of Ecodesign Competence Centre and others offered invaluable presentations on this topic.
The audience was also interested in such topics as “Green Traditions and Green Country” covered by the Adviser to the President of Latvia on Modern State and Sustainability Issues Elīna Pinto and a psychotherapist and a mindfulness and meditation trainer and coach Ansis Jurģis Stabiņģis, who covered the topic “Green Health and Self- development”.
Topics that will also be important next year
The “Green Expo Riga 2019” speakers and participants outlined topics that should also be brought under spotlight at “Green Expo Riga 2020”: administrative territorial reform and its impact on the green economy in Latvia; the so-called “artificial product greening” that affects the promotion of eco-ideas; practical information on small grant programme for eco-projects to be carried out in municipalities, enterprises, schools and associations; discussion of the State Chancellery and the Presidential Chancellery long-term vision in an informal and open atmosphere; pre-requisites for green education and awareness of Latvia as a green state, starting with the understanding of making choices of becoming more environmentally friendly on a personal level.
According to our observations, around 30-50 people followed and engaged in discussions on both event days. The content of discussions was very extensive and diverse.
At the “Green Expo Riga” exhibition, around 20 participants presented innovation and practical solutions for green living, e.g. the air purification technology created in Latvia – the living wall “Elpo” that serves as an indoor vertical garden and should only be cared for once a month; VERMI Composter for processing food waste using earthworms. It can even be placed in an apartment and the mass obtained used to grow plants! Greenworks presented an ecological coating “Ecodur” made from a mixture of plaster and castor oil that protects different objects from environmental exposure.
The exhibition "Nogāzt Goliātu" (Bringing Goliath Down) held by the Ecodesign Competence Centre told about the world’s first pesticide-free city.
Children had an opportunity to take part in Velokurjers cycling competitions, activities offered by Riebiņi Secondary School and learn about the devastating impact of plastic on the marine ecosystem thanks to the aquarium exhibited by the Latvian Institute of Aquatic Ecology.
We estimate that more than 8 thousand stakeholders acquainted with the “Green Expo Riga 2019” exhibition and content, of which more than 300 were targeted visitors –healthy lifestyle devotees, representatives of green foundations and associations, entrepreneurs and experts. Event occurring simultaneously – the trade show for housing design, repair, energy saving and home comfort technologies “ComfortHome 2019” was attended by 11,966 visitors.
Green-educated society and constructive dialogue – these were and will be the main objectives of everyone present, so let’s meet at “Green Expo Riga 2020” to be held from 2–4 October next year!
