Best Chef of Latvia 2017 to be announced in Ķīpsala!

To determine the best chef of Latvia and to promote the professional development, exchange of experience and mutual cooperation of Latvian chefs, the International Food Industry Trade Fair “Riga Food 2017” is organising the competition “The 2017 Best Chef of Latvia” on 8 September.

The goal of the contest is to establish and develop the art of cooking in Latvia in accordance with the essence of the “Modern Latvian Cuisine” manifestation - good taste, quality and providing healthy nutrition at the same time.

“Without doubt, the main benefit of the chefs, by participating in this contest, is experience and acknowledging their strengths. The contest is discovering new talents every year, who have put in a lot of effort to achieve high results, which are also recognised by an international jury” says the Chairman of the Board of the association “Chefs’ club”, Raimonds Zommers, and he also adds: “While organising the contest, we strive to stick to proven values - seasonal products of Latvia. And the new recipes of the contestants are surely supplementing the modern culinary heritage of Latvia.”

The chefs are invited to apply!

To apply for the contest The 2017 Best Chef of Latvia, the participants must submit a home assignment until 1 August - a recipe for a cold appetiser containing a whole quail and quail eggs, a recipe for a vegetarian main dish containing fennel, parsnip and fresh currants, as well as a dessert recipe containing vodka and frozen chokeberries. The application for the contest must be sent to: rita.stramkale@gmail.com with a subject “Pavāru konkursam”.

The finalists will compete in Ķīpsala
After the evaluation of the home tasks, the eight best participants will be invited to the final. The finalists will be determined by an independent and competent jury, by evaluating the anonymous home tasks. Finalists of the competition will be announced no later than 25 August and already on 8 September they will meet in the Riga Food 2017 exhibition to compete for the title of the 2017 Best Chef of Latvia. In the final, the contestants will have to cook three foods in accordance with the conditions of the home assignment and recipes submitted in the applications.

“This year we have also prepared a surprise for the contestants - the product in the black box. What is this product going to be? We will announce that only at the start of the contest! We only know that this product will be used for cooking the dessert”, says the Chairman of the Board of the association “Chefs’ club”, Raimonds Zommers.

International jury and valuable prizes

The creations of the chefs will be evaluated by an international jury that has a big experience in evaluating contests, according to the following criteria - food design, taste and product compatibility, technical skills and organization of work.

The top three finalists will receive medals, certificates and prizes from sponsors and supporters. The winner of the competition will receive the challenge cup “The Reaton Golden Ladle” awarded by the general sponsor SIA Reaton, Ltd and a cash prize – EUR 1000.

The 2016 Best Chef of Latvia
Last year, the honourable title of the 2016 Best Chef of Latvia and the Reaton Golden Ladle was awarded to Kristīne Strode from the La Dome restaurant; the second best in the final was Dinārs Zvidriņš from the Kaļķu vārti restaurant and the third - self-employed Jegors Poruļevs. By the way, this was not the first victory for Kristīne Strode! She also has the title of the 2014 Best Chef of Latvia.

The international trade fair for food, beverages, food processing, technologies, packaging, public catering, horeca and shop equipment and services “Riga Food 2017” will take place from 6 to 9 September in the Ķīpsala International Exhibition Centre.
